Hermione buys Crookshanks in diagon ally before they start their third year at Hogwarts. She buys him at the Magical Menagerie. Hermione bought him because he was there quite a time and nobody wanted him, because of his looks. Crookshanks is large and orange with a somewhat squashed-up face.
